Introducing Eigen DA, the inaugural AVS offering from Eigen Layer that's poised to become a formidable contender in the data availability (DA) market. Never one to rest, Eigen pushes the boundaries by not only unveiling an entirely new Ethereum primitive, pioneering novel staking methods, and reshaping Ethereum middleware, but also by introducing Eigen DA as the next leap forward in data availability. This essential component of L2s will be a must for re-stakers and node operators. Given your existing trust in Eigen Layer contracts with your valuable ETH, the decision to re-stake for securing the DA becomes a no-brainer.
Multiple future AVSs have already signed up for Eigen DA such as Mantle, and I am sure that wave is coming. This is one of the few AVSs that already is showing strong demand pre main net launch! So let’s dive into data availability on Eigen!
Data availability (DA) is defined as the assurance that full nodes have been able to access and verify the full set of transactions associated with a specific block. In other words, a full node verify that all the changes sent to it from peers match the changes it has computed independently. This is crucial for full nodes to reach consensus. However, if data is missing, full nodes cannot perform this function. That's where data availability comes in! When we, at Eigen Hub, set up our Ethereum node to serve as a node operator, we had to download each block in the Ethereum chain. This process underpins "on-chain DA" for Ethereum L1, a feature of monolithic blockchains, and a requirement for staking and re-staking. Yet, demanding every node to download all transaction data poses scalability and decentralization challenges. For modular blockchains like layer 2 rollups, the DA solution needs to be more sophisticated.
guaranteeing data availability is a problem in it’s own right but beyond what we are exploring here. If interested look up the data availability problem and erasure coding.
Rollups demand data availability solutions that prove to the network that a summarized version of a transaction added to the blockchain truly represents a valid set of transactions—trustlessly—without necessitating every node to download all data. Eigen DA excels in this role and beyond.
To sum up, we know that L2s and some other actively validated services utilizing Eigen Layer necessitate a data availability layer to function. Ethereum L1 is monolithic and thus DA is provided on the L1 chain. In contrast, L2s are modular and need a data availability module to improve cost/efficiency as compared to the L1, and this is where Eigen DA steps in to serve the market.
Multiple modules power an L2, including Execution, Settlement, DA, and Ordering, as depicted in the graphic below:
Eigen performs the DA function for roll ups but brings so many more advantages over its competitors. The possibilities are vast but here are a few of the Eigen DA advantages.
Current DA solutions often feature unpredictable fee structures. Eigen DA enables you to reserve future DA for a fixed, low fee.
Eigen DA payments, including support from re-stakers, can be made in native tokens if re-stakers are willing to accept them. Native token inflation can contribute to security funding.
Eigen DA fees ultimately benefit us—re-stakers and operators—aligning the system with the Ethereum/Eigen community. DApps could pay fees exclusively in their tokens and then dictate how those tokens incentivize re-stakers, potentially including lock-ups for higher APY, airdrops, and new governance structures. Imagine securing a protocol while enjoying boosted voting power on improvement proposals through lock-up earnings.
A protocol relying solely on its native token for staking, not re-staked ETH, risks a death spiral: Native token value decreases, security value decreases, and users withdraw. Eigen DA provides a safeguard.
You gain Ethereum-level censorship resistance.
Benefit from Ethereum's world-class economic security, ETH re-staking liquidity, and secure roll-up bridges.
This stands as one of the most thrilling prospects for re-stakers within the ecosystem today. Eigen DA's potential demand surge in the upcoming bull run is poised to pave the way for significant re-staking opportunities. As the tide of demand converges towards Eigen DA, re-stakers are positioned to reap the rewards.
